Is it okay to have one of those happy Buddha figurines?

even though I'm not a Buddhist? I like them.

I'm not religious or anything. I'm atheist, but I do like those Buddha statues.

Of course it is.

He can be found in many Chinese restaurants even though some of them aren't Buddhists.

As a Buddhist myself, I'm sure Maitreya (or the Laughing Buddha) does not mind. After all, he is compassionate to all sentient beings (and thus tolerant of all of them).

INTERESTING FACT: One belief, popular in folklore but not part of Buddhist doctrine, maintains that rubbing his belly brings wealth, good luck and prosperity.
