Magic and Magick - How Rituals Work and Why

Magic and Magick

The term Magick, with the added k, was created by the very controversial Aleister Crowley. Despite the drama, strange hat wearing and fuss over his life and career, Crowley was a real erudite and the first to establish the act of ritual as an act of the magician's will, instead than a favour from an invoked entity.

Until then, the wizard had to protect himself from a very hostile entity whom he had invoked inside a locked pentagram to keep the entity from escaping and entering our dimension. The entity was asked a favour, which of course had to be paid with some kind of offering or sacrifice. A very dangerous procedure with many risks and awful consequences.

Crowley created a ritual system that was supported entirely by the will of the magician, will that had to be fortified with a certain lifestyle based on study and meditation. He had read Nietzsche's work and was passionate about Asian religions, having been to the Himalayas as a mountaineer. Recognizing the endless power of the mind, he leaves to entity the presence of a guest on a sacred feast, something definitely less dangerous for the magician.

I do not follow all of Crowley's methods, but I believe he was the agent of the bigger change in the history of Witchcraft in the last centuries, and the one who allowed the Craft to enter modernity and have a meaning for the “20th century man”. He defended a magickal practise away from superstition and obscurity and published continuously from 23 to his death at the age of 72. Today, with all the new knowledge about the brain's functions and abilities, we can begin to prove this true.

How Rituals Work and Why

So, when you are making a ritual, you don't stand on your knees asking for a favour any more. You incarnate the God/Goddess himself/herself. During the time of the ritual, your will is the will of the Goddess; you can materialize anything your mind can create. A focused, compassionate and clear mind is the biggest tool of a witch. In High Magick, many rituals are made only using that tool, with no physical objects to support them. The realization of your wish is not a matter of the generosity of the gods any more; it depends entirely on you.

Second, a ritual is an act of change. You understand that you have a difficulty because you have lost your natural connection with you Higher Self, and want the help of your guides to reconnect with yourself and thus, change for the better to be able to overcome all difficulties yourself. When we cannot find love, keep a job, or make ourselves successful, it is time to stop blaming others. Let me tell you something: in 18 years, less than 5% of the people who have come to me saying they were cursed really had that problem. The other 95% we just unable to accept changes and unwilling to learn from their mistakes.

Third, a ritual is an act of faith, faith in your guides and faith in yourself. As believers, we do not make the ritual alone, but assisted and comforted by or guides. And faith is only a question of love. Simply. How can you doubt someone you love, and that guides you and loves you, will not help you? A Witch that has a strong, loving relationship with her guides does not doubt, and therefore her spells work.

The physical part (tools, herbs) of a ritual works because everything you use in it is connected to the Cosmos' natural flow. Colours, candles, herbs and all magickal elements are interconnected through aural vibrations. These vibrations have analogue relationship to numbers, planets, letters, etc. When you put together the right elements in the right amount, you create a focus of energy, like if you lit a candle in the dark. You open the gate to communicate both with your Higher Self and with your guardian entities.

This is not dark, superstitious stuff as you can see – how could I believe in something I don't understand? I'm not that type of person. I'm not the one to be a victim of the will of the Gods either. I truly believe we are the masters of our destiny, which is self-realization and service at equal parts, and only developing the strength of our will we will achieve that. This is what you will find in my work.

Intention, faith and knowledge of the Craft, one cup of each. Now let's go to the kitchen and bake a great spell.

Having problems preparing for a simple spell? Magick and Paganism.?

Simple Move away Spell #1

When the moon is in a Waning Phase, write on white parchment paper the full name of the person you want to move, along with birth date. Roll up the paper, with a photo if you have one, place inside a bottle of vinegar, then toss into a body of running water, visualize your enemy moving away as the bottle is washed away.

How do I perform this spell if I'm not living no where by a body of water, can I substitute for changing the bottle of vinegar and flushing the paper down the toilet and if so, should I cut a doorway in the circle to do so, wait after the spell or what, and I'm concerned, I'm new to spells and magick and I've been worrying whether this is gray or black magick and how can I incorporate the rule of "Harm none" into this spell? Does anyone know any good sites for spells related to this.

No, for that spell you need the running water. Just flushing it down the toilet won't work because your link to the person will no longer be immersed in the vinegar. The vinegar sours the persons life circumstances, and then by throwing it into a body of running water, they are therefore being carried away in search of better circumstances.

Also, you'll have a way higher success rate with this spell if you can get a personal concern of that person (hair, fingernail, etc). If you can't get something from their body, then use a picture of them in addition to just writing their name. Just writing a name is a very weak link, you should try to get something stronger if you want a better chance for this to work.

DON'T MAKE SPELL SUBSTITUTIONS UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! You'll end up with a bunch of really ineffective magic. Once you have mastered the theory and practice of it, then you can see where substitutions can be made. Until you know, don't mess with it. Things are there for a reason. Did you know WHY the spell was asking you to put vinegar in the jar - that it was to sour their life??

DON'T DO MAGIC IF YOU DON'T HAVE A GOOD GRASP ON ETHICS AND MORALS OF IT, no matter which system of magic you are working in. Obviously different magical systems have different morals. By talking of "circles" and "harm none" I assume you're Wiccan. Well, this spell is very grey, just so you know. You can't "harm none" while souring their life and causing them to move away. But don't even get me started on how the Wiccan Rede has been oversimplified to the point of being absurd. The ethics of Wicca are actually much more grey than anyone would like to admit, so perhaps you should do a great deal more study on that matter before doing anything that you think might go against your ethical code.

DON'T DO SPELLS UNLESS YOU'VE DONE A DIVINATION BEFORE HAND TO SEE WHAT THE OUTCOME WILL BE! Many times what you're planning simply won't work, so your divination can help you see that and figure out what methods will work for you. You should never cast without having a very good idea of what the outcome will be on all parties.

KNOW THE PROCEDURES OF SPIRITUAL CLEANSING AND PROTECTION FOR THE CASTER
Do you realize that by doing this type of spell, you will need to take a cleansing bath afterwards in order to make sure you've washed away any traces of the negativity that you've worked with? You'll need to take a hyssop bath afterwards in order to keep yourself clean from the mess that you've worked on creating. If you're going to be doing spell work regularly, no matter whether it's beneficial or baneful, you're going to need to adopt a spiritual cleansing and protection routine that you keep up with. Otherwise you're going to be swimming through muddy magical waters all the time and that's not good for anyone. You need to keep things clean.

Just letting you know some basics so that you can understand what you're going to do. I don't know you or your situation or the person you're trying to move, so I don't know if it's justified or not. But I do feel you should learn more about the theory and practice of witchcraft, as well as really get a solid foundation in ethics and morality of the system of magic you are working within.

Also, learning how to focus the mind strongly, visualize strongly, call up your emotions strongly, and then learning to direct energy will help you be more successful in spellwork. Are you already very experienced with these skills? If not then you may want to spend some time honing these very elementary magical skills before taking on crossing/hexing work such as this.
